and now this

I’m overwhelmed.  I can’t believe it.  What in the world? I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the death of a very nice young man last might and then this.    We have to acknowledge that evil exists in the world. Evil that, as a roaring lion is seeking whom it may devour.  Whether it’s one young man on the way from a convenience store wearing a hoody, a group of young people watching a movie, a single young man on the way home from his part-time job or little ones attending school, our future is being targeted by the forces of evil.  We have to, as human beings, acknowledge the hand of dark vs. light in these incidents.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)

As a parent, I can’t say that I understand what it feels like to have lost a child to senseless violence. I don’t know.  My children made it to adult hood. While its tragic to have something like this happen near Christmas, for the parents who have lost children it wouldn’t matter what time of year it is.  I don’t want to even begin to try to figure out what would cause someone to do something like this.  We can say “guns don’t kill people with people” but   after seeing this play out in the media and in real life over and over again in our country, that argument is weak.   Truth of the matter is “people with guns kill people.”  Every act of violence as heinous as this cannot be attributed to mental illness.
