Right now there…

Right now there are many North Carolinians who are congratulating themselves for thwarting same sex marriage in their state.  Same sex marriage was already illegal in North Carolina.  However, by adding this language to the states constitution “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State”, we ( and I say we because I live here) are basically saying that any domestic partnership, regardless of the gender involved, if it is not a marriage of one man and one woman, is not recognized as legal.

I don’t claim to be a political strategist or an expert on the law, but I do have a grasp of the English (American) language.  I understand that language this ambiguous leaves  room for a lot of loop holes.  For instance if there is a child whose parents are not married but co-habitate and that child has a chronic condition for which an insurance company has paid numerous claims, and that insurance company has now decided that the risk to continue to insure this particular child is too high, the language of this amendment now gives this insurance company a loophole through which they can drop this child’s coverage.

Or perhaps there is a woman who was in a domestic partnership with someone who was physically abusive.  This woman had to have an order of protection against that abusive partner.  Would this new language in the state’s constitution now prevent this from being treated as a domestic violence case since the only legally recognized union is a marriage between one man and one woman?   As I said I’m no expert on the law.

It is my opinion that many people voted for Amendment One in North Carolina out of a sense of overblown religiosity.  Not fully understanding that same sex marriage was already illegal in North Carolina they really believed that they were protecting their Christian values.  I felt the same way initially but I did my research.  We as believers want to do the right thing.  We believe what the bible says.  I know I do.  I especially believe in the part that says you should love the Lord with all your heart soul and mind and your neighbor as yourself.  I also believe that part where Jesus said that they will know that we are His by our love for one another.  God is the only true judge and He will judge when the time comes.  It’s not up to me or anybody else to do that.  If we call ourselves Christians then we should be characterized by our love for our fellow man.  Period.

There was another change to the Constitution of the State of North Carolina regarding marriage in 1875.  It said ” All marriages between a white person and a negro, or between a white person and a person of negro descent to the third generation inclusive, are hereby forever prohibited.”
